Nokia Music also works nicely with Snap, Windows 8's screen-sharing feature for viewing two apps at once. One problem I hit, however, is that Nokia Music did not display cover art for any of my personal music, a problem I've never experienced with the built-in Music app.

If you want to play your own music inside Nokia Music you can do that too, just like in the Windows 8 Music app from Microsoft. This is par for the course on broadcast radio, of course, but it's not something I've experienced before using Xbox Music or Spotify. When I was playing a mix featuring Pink's song Blow Me (One Last Kiss), a four-letter word that starts with 's' and ends with 't' was edited out. You can also push tunes to DLNA-equipped hardware in your home theater.ĭuring my tests with the app I noticed that Music+ streams used radio edits for songs with coarse language, that is they edit out the swear words. One nice feature hidden in the app's settings offers the ability to set the currently playing artist's wallpaper as your lock screen, which changes as the tracks change on your mix.
Swiping down from the top automatically saves the currently playing mix for offline listening. There are very few hidden controls exposed by a swipe up or right-click, other than a Buy link and a "now playing" icon. With Nokia Music, what you see is pretty much what you get. Some of the pages for more well-known artists also feature recent tweets from the performer's official Twitter account. If you tap the artist's name you open an artist page inside the app featuring artist bios, mixes that include the artist, upcoming gigs, and a list of similar artists. Tapping or clicking on the song's name opens a Web page on Nokia Music where you can buy the track, and tapping on a quotation mark shows song lyrics powered by LyricFind. Since Music+ is an Internet radio-style service the back button only works when listening to tracks you own.
That "now playing" section is comprised of a nearly full-screen background image of the artist, along with basic music player controls: Play, forward, and back. Unlike the Windows 8 Music app, which shows your Windows Music library first, the track you're currently listening to on Nokia Music is the first thing you see when you fire up the app.

Each section of the app is divided up into a series of tiles showing you a list of available mixes, recent mixes you listened to, mixes you've created, and your own music library. Plugins are there to enhance the overall user experience by adding new or improved functionality to an already comprehensive media player. There is an equalizer and a compressor among the audio tools, while the video toolbox packs adjustments for the image, the colors, the geometry, the overlay and more. The application comes with various adjustments and effects that you can experiment with to obtain better playback quality. You can modify the view or the deinterlace mode, adjust the zoom level or change the aspect ratio. Enhanced video and audio playback controlsĪdditional options and tools are available via the player’s menus, providing enhanced playback control, playlist management, audio, video and subtitles configuration tools.

Furthermore, there is the VLC skin editor, which makes it possible to design your own, customized version of the VLC player. Those who feel the need to customize the interface’s looks should know that VLC Media Player comes with skin support and a variety of them available for download. While the GUI might not be so impressive as far as the design is concerned, but all the basic playback controls are in place and within reach.
